Some who knew her suspect she was murdered. A former BBC journalist was mysteriously found dead in a Turkish airport bathroom, immediately sparking speculation that the journalism advocate based in Iraq was murdered. Jacky Sutton, 50, was flying from London to Iraq late Saturday night when a local state-run report claims she took her own life after missing a connecting flight at Atatürk International Airport in Istanbul. According to an unsourced report by Turkey's Anadolu Agency, Sutton was distraught over not having enough money to buy a new ticket home. Turkey's private Dogan news agency, also not citing a source, said she hanged h

More manufacturers found to violate diesel emissions standards — but blame the test, not the vehicles

Technology
Share This article New test results published today showed that dozens of diesel cars from multiple manufacturers fail to meet specified European emission targets. Vehicles from Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Citroen, Fiat, Volvo, and Jeep were all tested in real-world conditions — and all of them found severely wanting. The average Mercedes Benz produced at least 2.2x more NOx than the official Euro-5 level and 5x more than the ecological Euro-6 emission standard allows. Honda’s diesels emitted between 2.6x and 6x more NOx than allowed. Mazda and Mitsubishi both failed the test as well. Out of 50 vehicles that supposedly met Euro-6 levels and 150 Euro-5 diesels, just five vehicles out of more than 200 emitted real-world particulate levels that matched their in-house lab tests. The differe

7 new cases of Legionnaires’ disease found in the Bronx

Health
Janice Haney Carr/AP A large grouping of Legionella pneumophila bacteria (Legionnaires' disease) is pictured. Here we go again. The South Bronx is once again at the center of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak, with a cluster of seven new cases in the borough’s Morris Park section. None of the cases have been fatal, and the victims — who range in age from 45 to 75 years old — all had preexisting health conditions that made them vulnerable to the potentially deadly disease. Authorities did not identify any other details of the victims, citing patient confidentiality. Officials say the latest cluster of cases is not related to the deadly Legionnaires’ outbreak over the summer, which killed 12 people and sickened more than 100. That outbreak was the largest in the city’s history. The summer out

MH370 found? New debris off the coast of Madagascar sparks immediate investigation

Technology
Share This article Ever since MH370 went down in the Indian Ocean (at least, according to the best-available data), pundits, amateur enthusiasts, deep sea salvage experts, and whackjob conspiracy theorists have hotly debated the final resting place of the aircraft. After more than a year of searching, we may finally have a partial answer as to what happened to the plane, thanks to new debris found on Réunion Island, 500 miles east of Madagascar. The wing piece, compared to a diagram of a Boeing 777. French officials are cautioning against early conclusions (Réunion is French territory), but aircraft experts have already analyzed the wreckage and concluded it came from a Boeing 777, the same type of aircraft as the downed airliner. It appears to be part of a wing flap, and while I ca

BAUCHI, Nigeria — A sack of homemade bombs discovered at an abandoned Boko Haram camp exploded, killing 63 people in northeast Nigeria, civilian self-defense fighters said Wednesday. Haruna Bukar, a witness to the blast, said the local militia was patrolling the area when they discovered the camp and found the bag of metal objects, which they carried to the nearby town of Monguno. As residents gathered around to examine the bag, it exploded, Bukar said. Scores of people have been killed this month in suicide and other
