LAS VEGAS — Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or are perhaps a company executive or a member of Congress with a gold-plated, fully paid-for insurance plan, you know healthcare costs in the United States have skyrocketed in the past 30 years. The issue, which has been politically charged with the recent moves to defang the Affordable Care Act, is not just about insurance costs. High health insurance premiums simply reflect a complex health care system that has seen little significant structural change to reduce costs or new business models, or to use a favored word in tech, disruption. But we know technology has caused significant disruption in a host of industries. Healthcare is ripe for innovations that enable that disruption. At we saw at CES 2018, small and large companies are taki

Researchers at Google have developed a way to predict a person’s blood pressure, age, and smoking status from an image of their retina, according to Scientific American. This data may even be enough to determine when someone is at high risk of a heart attack.Google’s research used a convolutional neural network, the same biologically inspired system used to identify objects in photos. However, these networks can do plenty of other things if you just train them on different data sets. Convolutional neural networks are able to analyze an over

Marilyn Barbone Gold, frankincense and myrrh in abstract pattern over old paper are the three most famous gifts in history and all of them keep giving in many ways. Have yourself a merry — and healthy — little Christmas. Those three wise men who came bearing gold, frankincense and myrrh were even wiser than you might think. Their presents continue to be valuable today, often in ways most people don't know. And other holiday traditions also have surprising side benefits: FRANKINCENSE An herb, made from the resin of boswellia trees has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine to reduce inflammation in joints. kGoal, Photo Illustration: R. A. Di Ieso/Vocativ Is an advertisement for a tool that strengthens the pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy the same as penis enlargement pills or a pickup artist handbook? It is if it links to a website that also sells sex toys, according to Facebook. The company has rejected a series of ads for kGoal, a high-tech device for “pelvic floor fitness,” on the grounds that it violates the company’s ban on promoting “adult products or services.” The issue is that the kGoal ad campaign linked to its parent company’s website, which also sells vibrators, according to a Facebook spokesperson. Indeed, Minna Life, the San Francisco start-up that produces kGoal, sells two award-winning vibrators. The company’s CEO is critical of Facebook’s decision, citing the ways that

Share This article It has been almost two years since the FDA ordered online genetic testing firm 23andMe to stop offering its health screening service. Now, the company has jumped through all the necessary regulatory hoops to begin offering health data again. However, the service will be much more narrow in focus than what it was offering previously. 23andMe offers genetic testing kits for $ 199 (sometimes less when it’s on sale), and they’ve been available this whole time. The company has always offered ancestry analysis (e.g. where in the world your genes might come from) in addition to health screening, and that part of the service was unaffected by the FDA action. Prior to the FDA-mandated end of disease reporting, 23andMe would show users the estimated likelihood they would dev

Dan Steinberg/AP It was considered one of the most shocking suicides in Hollywood’s history, when comedian Robin Williams took his own life in 2014 after apparently struggling with depression for years. They are urging others to know they are not in the fight alone. The National Alliance on Mental Illness recognizes the first full week of October as “Mental Illness Awareness Week.” The campaign is geared towards ending stigmas associated with having mental health issues. Around one in five American adults will experience mental illness in a given year, according to statistics from the NAMI website. Among the most prevalent of illnesses are depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. This year, NAMI has launched its theme around a social media campaign, #IAmStigmafree
